NOW THE NEWS!

FDA Requires Safe Handling Labels for Shell Eggs
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
FDA issued a final regulation requiring shell egg
cartons to bear
the following: SAFE HANDLING INSTRUCTIONS: To prevent
illness from bacteria: keep eggs refrigerated, cook
eggs until
yolks are firm, and cook foods containing eggs
thoroughly. This
label requirement will be effective September 4, 2001.
CFSAN Authority Over Dietary Supplement Claims
Increases
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
FDA has established an intercenter agreement between
CFSAN
(Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition) and
CDER (Center
for Drug Evaluation and Research). Under the
agreement, CFSAN
now has the authority to take regulatory action
against companies
that label dietary supplements with disease/drug
claims.

Authors Note: This agreement lays the groundwork for
greater
scrutiny of dietary supplement label claims and
enforcement of the
pertinent regulations. By law, dietary supplements
are not allowed
to use disease/drug claims, but can use structure
function claims.

FDA Sets Priority to Help Industry Reduce Undeclared
Allergens
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
An FDA priority for 2001 is to provide guidance to
industry and
regulators on how to manage allergens through
appropriate
manufacturing and labeling practices. FDA food recall
actions
for undeclared allergens such as peanuts, eggs, and
milk have
increased significantly over the last decade.
FYI TIP: If you manufacture in a facility that
processes any of
eight foods known to cause ninety percent of severe
life-
threatening reactions (peanuts, eggs, milk and milk
by-products,
wheat, tree nuts, soy, fish, and shellfish), let The
Food Consulting
Company know. We will include the proper statements
on the
label.
