USDA Defines Four Categories of Organic Labeling
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
-- 100 Percent Organic - must contain only organic
ingredients
-- Organic - must contain at least 95% organic
ingredients
-- Made with Organic Ingredients - must contain at
least 70%
organic ingredients
-- Processed products with less than 70% organic
ingredients
may identify the specific ingredients that are
organically
produced on the ingredient statement but may not
use the
term "organic" on the front of the package.
FDA Defines/Explains "New" Ingredients In Dietary
Supplements
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
FDA has published guidelines to help supplement
manufacturers
determine:
-- What is a new dietary ingredient
-- When must you notify the FDA about a new dietary
ingredient
-- What information must your notification contain
-- Where do you send your premarket notification
Read Guidelines:
http://www.cfsan.fda.gov/~dms/ds-ingrd.html#whatinfo
Author's Note: Per FDA, "A dietary supplement is
limited to products
(1) that are intended for ingestion in tablet,
capsule, powder, softgel,
gelcap, and liquid form, (2) that are not represented
as conventional
food or as the sole item of a meal or of the diet, and
(3) that are labeled
as dietary supplements." The Food Consulting Company
can help you
determine if your products will be regulated as foods
or dietary
supplements.

Consumer Groups Report Mislabeled Products
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Two leading consumer advocacy organizations, the
National Consumers
League (NCL) and the Consumer Federation of America
(CFA), have
urged FDA to force manufacturers to correct misleading
labels. The
release reports that many high protein, low
carbohydrate bars violate
current labeling laws and misinforms consumers about
the nutritional
content of the bars.
