Wait for Canadian Food Label Rules Continues
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
INTOUCH has learned from a Health Canada spokesperson
that publication of Canada's food labeling regulations
has been
delayed due to the large volume of comments received
on the
proposed rules, as they were published in the Canada
Gazette,
Part I, June 16, 2001. Publication of the regulations
in Canada
Gazette , Part II, (final step to turn the proposal
into law) is now
expected before the end of the current calendar year.
FYI: The clock is ticking for organic food sellers. On
October 21,
2002, all foods sold as organic must comply to
National Organic
Standards. Organic sellers scrambling to meet the
deadline can
refer to clear and concise label requirements
presented in chart
form at
http://www.ams.usda.gov/nop/LabelingTable082002.pdf
And, don't forget, The Food Consulting Company can do
the label
work for you.
